One-owner used cars

When people purchase a used vehicle one of the major things taken into account is whether the vehicle had more than one owner. What gives a one-owner used vehicle an advantage over vehicles with multiple owners?

The fewer times a vehicle has switched hands, the more likely it is that the former owner took good care of it. Also, one owner usually means the vehicle has less wear and usage! Majority of people trade out their vehicles before they reach the 100,000 mile mark.

A one-owner vehicle might cost more but you will benefit having a reliable vehicle that will less likely need expensive repairs.

The best way to find out the ownership history of a vehicle is to look at its CARFAX Vehicle History report. A trustworthy dealer, such as Texas Auto, will provide a CARFAX report for potential buyers. When you shop for a used car with Texas Auto, you will be provided with all the crucial car history information that might influence your opinion of the vehicle, such as its number of owners. There are many vehicles at Texas Auto that are one-owner vehicles.

Stay safe this hurricane season

According to NASA, hurricanes are the most violent storms on Earth. Officially, the Atlantic hurricane season started on June 1 and will run until Nov. 30. In the Eastern Pacific Ocean, hurricane season began May 15 and ends Nov. 30, according to the National Weather Service. Most storms hit during peak hurricane season between August and October.

The Climate Prediction Center released its 2017 hurricane outlook on May 25. This year is likely to be an above-normal hurricane season for the Atlantic. You may know how to prepare your home ahead of a storm but do you know how to to prepare to protect your vehicles?

  1. Contact your vehicle insurance agency about your policy’s hurricane coverage. Find out what is covered as well as what steps to take in the event your vehicle is damaged in a hurricane.  Take pictures of your vehicle’s interior and exterior as you make your hurricane preparations. You will need proof of your vehicle’s condition, for insurance purposes, should disaster strike. Store copies of your vehicle’s registration and insurance documents in a Ziploc bag should the interior of your vehicle get wet.
  2. Check your vehicles fluids. The following fluids should be checked: oil, brake, transmission, power steering, battery, windshield wiper fluids, and radiator coolant. Replace your drive belt if necessary. Make sure your tires are properly inflated- don’t forget to check your spare tire!
  3. Before a hurricane hits, fill your gas tank and any reserve canisters to their full capacity. With a full tank of gas, you’ll be more likely to get somewhere safe without having to make a stop for fuel.
  4. Have an emergency kit in your vehicle! Some recommend items for the emergency kit: Fix-a-Flat, extra motor oil, tire jack, jumper cables, batteries, blanket, can opener, pocket knife, automotive toolkit, first aid kit, food and water. Keeping an extra supply of water in your vehicle is super important. Not only can this water be used for your vehicle but it can also be used for drinking. The basic requirement for water during an emergency is 3 gallons per person per a day.
  5. If you have to leave your vehicle behind park it somewhere safe. Parking your vehicle safely before a hurricane typically involves protecting it from water and high winds. Park away from any loose structures such as light poles, stop lights, road signs, and trees. These could fall and cause damage to your vehicle. Try to park in your garage but if you don’t have a garage, consider parking your vehicle close to a building. This can help protect your vehicle from high winds. Remember to apply your emergency brake. Apply masking tape to your vehicles windows in order to make cleanup easier in the event your windows break.

In order to be as safe as possible during hurricane conditions, stay informed of a tropical storm’s progress, following the recommendations of local and federal officials. Know the emergency evacuation routes and never drive during a hurricane unless it is an absolute emergency. If you do have to drive, avoid flooded roads and washed-out bridges. Watch for fallen objects, downed power lines, and weakened roads.

We hope you have found this helpful. Texas Auto reminds you to stay safe this hurricane season!

Ways to cool your car in the heat

In the summer heat, your car’s interior can reach 150 degrees! That is HOT!

There are many ways to prevent your car from turning into an oven and avoiding a sauna experience during your car ride. Here are some useful tips that can keep your car cool during the summer!

Put up a sun shade! Putting up sunshades can block out the direct heat from entering your vehicle. Sun shades are affordable, easy to use and can save you a lot of trouble!

Crack your windows! By slightly cracking open a couple windows, you can create an airflow that will ventilate all of the hot air trapped inside of your car.

Tint your windows! Similar to using a sunshade- just a bit more expensive. Tinted windows will constantly block out the sun and provide privacy to your car at the same time. Make sure to research your states law on tent levels before you tent your windows.

Use the bottom vents! The first reaction of most people in a hot car is to blow air on their face and upper body. In fact, it is better to turn on the bottom vents because heat rises and your feet control your body temperature.

Park underneath shade! This is the easiest and smartest solution to keeping your car cool during the summer. If you can’t find a shaded spot, turn your car so that the sunlight shines into the back of your car. This way you’ll avoid having a hot steering wheel.

Improve your gas mileage

As the summer temperatures creep in, motorists should remember that vehicles can get better fuel efficiency with their windows closed and air conditioning on when at fast speeds. However, during stop-and-go traffic it’s more efficient to open the windows, according to the Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association (AASA).

The aerodynamics of a vehicle are improved with the windows closed on the highway, as there is less drag on the vehicle. There are other ways to improve fuel efficiency with the top advice being to service your vehicle regularly!

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), there are several other tips a motorist can follow to improve gas mileage, including:

  • Turn the engine off if you anticipate a lengthy wait. Idling burns more gas than restarting the engine.
  • Avoid carrying unnecessary weight in your vehicle. Extra weight decreases gas mileage. Also, reduce drag by placing items inside your vehicle rather than on roof racks.
  • Keep tires aligned and inflated. Keep tries inflated to the maximum pressure can improve the gas mileage of a vehicle.
  • Get regular car maintenance and engine tune-ups. Tune-ups improve performance of the vehicle as well as gas mileage.
  • Avoid stop and go traffic by taking an alternative route that may be less busy.

Common Spare Tire Problems

You never know when you’ll need to use your spare tire! A little preventive maintenance can play dividends when they’re needed.

If a compact spare tire has been tucked into a cargo floor for several years, there is a good chance it is severely underinflated. It may be unable to handle the load and stress of emergency road duty. Compact spares should be inflated to 60 pounds per square inch- anything less could damage the wheel. A “doughnut” spare is designed for only temporary use, though, typically up to 100 miles max. A vehicle owner should check the spare tire at least twice a year. If your spare is mounted to your liftgate or under the cargo area, dirt, salt, water, and snow can cause corrosion to your mounting hardware. Periodic inspection, and cleaning, can make it easier to remove the spare when needed.

If your vehicle has a tire inflator kit instead of a spare tire, you could run into different issues. The sealant may not be able to seal all punctures. Also the sealant that gets injected into the tire probably has an expiration date. The sealant might not work as well after that date, so it should be replaced.

Finally, keep a large plastic trash bag in your vehicle. This will allow you to transport a flat tire without dirtying the trunk, or potentially, the cabin.
